Inaburra Talk Their Way to the Trophy

The Inaburra School's Year 8 Debating Team employed words, wit and wisdom to win the Junior High School Division of the 2009 Sutherland Shire High School Debating title.

The Inaburra Team won four knockout rounds to secure their place in the grand final, held at Sutherland Council Chambers last Tuesday, where they were victorious against De la Salle College.

The Team, composed of First Speaker Cara Brady, Second Speaker Erica Lim, Third Speaker Chelsea Iverach, Team Adviser Angus Evans, and Researchers Jack Thompson and Roshan Pillai, presented the negative argument for the topic, 'We should support our own'.

The students adopted a unique approach of arguing that support should be given to others on the basis of need, rather than identity.

Debating Coordinator, Daniel Watson said the whole School is extremely proud of the Team who were named the overall winner in their division, which was comprised of 28 teams from 13 schools.

“There is a real atmosphere of celebration in the School, because the students at Inaburra get alongside academic achievement as much as they do with sporting success,” Mr Watson said.

Mr Watson said that the adjudicators of the Debate noted how well the students communicated and cooperated as a Team.

“The students gelled really well as a group and constantly delivered excellent and original ideas that they researched independently and discussed as a group,” Mr Watson said.

This triumph marks the fourth Junior High School Debating win for Inaburra since the competition's beginning, fifteen years ago.

Also this week, Inaburra's Junior School teams competed in the Independent Schools' Gala Day, winning each of their debates. Debating coach, Chelsea Gordon, is very proud of the way that the teams presented their cases and supported these with evidence. They have been learning to rebut and were complimented on their skill level by adjudicators.

“Younger students can achieve a great deal if they are taught to scaffold their thinking,” she said.

Inaburra's mission is to be a Christ-centred school, providing excellence in education for every student within a community of care.
