Knox 2 Inaburra 0
Date:08 Sep 2009
The State Final of the Combined Independent Schools Football Competition was held last Friday evening at Melita Stadium in front of a crowd of some 750 people.
Inaburra started confidently and pressed the Knox goal early in the game. The first half was an end to end affair with Inaburra's best chance a header to Jesse Shewin. It was well saved by the Knox keeper. Knox missed a couple of good chances, including a penalty, which was brilliantly saved by Inaburra keeper, James Cain.
In the second half Knox started to assert their authority. A break away by Luke Martin drew another excellent save from the Knox keeper, but the tide was turning towards the GPS school. The Inaburra boys tired after their semi-final victory only two days prior. With fifteen minutes to go a Knox header hit the top corner of the net. Knox 1 Inaburra 0.
Inaburra sought to push forward but were unable to penetrate the Knox defence. With five minutes left Knox added a second goal to deservedly win the cup.
Inaburra captain, Sam Cornish, praised the spirit of the team and thanked coaches Mr Dixon and Mr Lucas. Principal, Dr Paul Burgis, congratulated the team on their courage and skill. With victories over much larger schools, including Barker, Trinity and SCEGS, the Inaburra First XI is the pride of the school.
