Inaburra defeats Barker College in semi-final of CIS Shield

It has been a very difficult week for Barker College.  They lost one of their students in a tragic skiing accident. Despite the adversity and grief that they are facing as a school, Barker College students represented their school with great pride. All of us at Inaburra  know that the football match we played last night at Melita Stadium was insignificant in comparison to the events that have occurred at Barker this week.

Still, the game went ahead.  The boys from both sides played their hearts out. Inaburra was very much the underdog. Inaburra has 450 boys K-12:  Barker College has approximately 1500 boys K-12. Inaburra students come together as a team for this competition, Barker students play each weekend.  Inaburra has two tremendous teachers who coach and inspire the team in Mr Dixon and Mr Lucas: Barker has a designated football coach.

Anyone who saw the first fifteen minutes would have thought that Barker were going to win easily.  The pressure was all on the Inaburra goal and it seemed only a matter of time before a goal was scored. A penalty was awarded to Barker in the 14th minute when their striker was brought down in the box. The brilliant save by Inaburra keeper, James Cain, changed the mood of the game. Inaburra plays started to come off and Barker were put under some pressure.

After half-time the game swung more and more towards Inaburra. Jesse Shewan almost hooked the ball inside the post and the game ended with the ball in the Barker penalty area.

After all that energy and determination, the score at full-time was 0-0. It went to a penalty shoot-out.

There is no doubt that the hero of the Burra was James Cain. He saved the first two Barker penalties. Whilst Barker keeper also saved one, when Jesse Shewan put the ball away from the fifth spot-kick, the boys were overjoyed. They were going to the cup final!

What a wonderful achievement by the team. They will play against Knox on Friday night at 7.30pm at Melita Stadium. Again we will be the underdogs, but we don't mind that tag. It is all about school spirit and the boys have plenty.

The Inaburra team would like to thank Barker for the game and appreciate greatly their spirit in playing the game in a difficult week.
